Summer is a great time to harness the amazing power of direct sunlight and develop a true love affair with the sun! Whether you’re fighting a cancer battle or wanting to be the healthiest you can be, you’ll find the sun to be a powerful healing agent that you don’t want to miss!
We’ve been told that the sun will damage our skin and increase the chances of getting skin cancer, so many of us have always avoided direct sunlight or made sure to cover ourselves with sunscreen or clothing when outside. While too much sun exposure at the wrong times will damage our skin, and this should be avoided for sure, there is a whole, beautiful frequency of healing energy that is available from the sun and it behooves us to learn how to tap into it correctly.
When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, it was the end of summer in 1996 when we lived in Michigan. Part of the nutritional alternative program I began that fall had incorporated into it Dr. Johanna Budwig’s protocol. If you’ll remember from a previous blog post, she was a German scientist and the world’s foremost authority on fats and oils and how they affected every cell of the body. In her protocol for cancer patients she recommended that a daily “sun bath” be taken, exposing as much skin as possible to direct sunlight. She observed that her cancer patients who did get sunlight did much better than the ones who didn’t. Being that we lived in Michigan and it was fall and winter when I started this program, I had little to no opportunity to get in the sun. Thankfully, I recovered over that winter without this added benefit, but have been intrigued by her discoveries about sunlight ever since.
We all know that sunlight is the cause of our bodies producing Vitamin D, although it isn’t really a vitamin at all but a hormone, and that “Vitamin D” is one of the most powerful hormones that protects us against a host of diseases, including cancer. This alone merits getting into the sunshine. But there’s much more to it than that! From what I’ve read from Dr. Budwig’s research, the sun’s energy comes into the body with its powerful electrical charges and affects every single cell, but . . . it’s vitally important to have enough Omega 3 fats being consumed on a daily basis (see blog post on the Omega 3/6 balance) due to an incredible interaction between the cell wall and the sun’s energy. Cell membranes are primarily made up of fats – unsaturated fatty acids and cholesterol – with the omega-3 fats being the major building blocks. When your diet is adequate in omega-3 fats, they enhance the electrical nature of cell walls and membranes. Dr. Budwig surmised that the electrons coming from the sun added to the electrons from the flax seed oil, compounding the benefits of both. Isn’t that beautiful? I love to think of the amazing electrical energy that is being transferred into every cell in my body just by enjoying the sun!
But, what about skin damage from the sun? None of us want to look old and wrinkled or, worse than an unsightly appearance, get skin cancer! There is an app for that!!! It’s called DMinder! It’s free and it will detect your exact location and tell you when you can produce vitamin D (only when the sun is at least 30 degrees above the horizon), how long it is safe to stay in the sun (alarm will go off to remind you when you’ve had enough) and you can watch the rate at which vitamin D is being produced per second of sun exposure! From the information this app contains, you will also be able to know when the last day of the year is for getting that angle from the sun (here in Colorado it’s the middle of November) and when to start again in the spring, or winter, depending on where you live. It’s really an amazing app and one that I use almost everyday. Before understanding the sun’s angle and such, I believed sitting in the sun during the late afternoon or early evening was great. Wrong! The beneficial waves to produce vitamin D are not able to travel through the atmosphere at that time but the harmful, skin damaging ones are! It might feel great but we would only be damaging our skin at that time.
Sometimes it seems that the very simplest things we can do in life are the most powerful. We just have to make time to do them! We have come so far away from our roots by living in our modern culture that we must rediscover those simple things: fresh air, sunshine on bare skin, walking barefoot, eating real food and drinking pure water, connecting with others and laughing and loving well. We are fundamentally made of and connected to this earth and all that supports life on it. The plants we eat contain energy from the sun, without which they couldn’t survive. As science becomes more advanced and able to help us understand more and more, it will surely confirm what Dr. Budwig and others believed about the power of sunlight. In the meantime, download the dMinder app, get your omega 3/6 ratio in balance and take the time to get some sun!
