Even though this post isn’t related to cancer, I decided to write about something that happened recently with my thyroid because I know many of you might be dealing with either an underactive or overactive thyroid condition, as I did, and this just might provide an answer! I just experienced doing this, and it really was a remarkable experience!
Back in 1996, when I was diagnosed with breast cancer, my thyroid was found to be slightly underactive. Dr. Taylor (see previous post about My Cancer Diagnosis and who Dr. Taylor is) tried getting my thyroid back up to speed with nutritional intervention, to no avail. He recommended I start taking a prescription thyroid hormone, which I did for about the last twenty years. The amount of thyroid hormone needed never changed in all that time and I resigned myself to having to take one prescription medication probably the rest of my life. (My husband has never needed a regular prescription medication so I, being slightly competitive (!), was bugged!)
During the early part of last year (2018), I dropped around ten pounds without trying, started feeling quite fatigued, and noticed my heart beating harder at times. Life was busy so I didn’t put all the pieces together. I had a routine annual physical with a local family physician and found out my thyroid had swung the other way to being very overactive! All my symptoms fit but it was still quite a surprise! The doctor suggested scheduling an ultrasound as a first step, then going from there. I quickly realized that there were no “cures” for an overactive thyroid other than surgery to remove a nodule if there was one, or radiation of part or all of the thyroid, or even removing the entire gland. I asked the doctor if she would be willing to give me a month or so to see if it would regulate on its own and she agreed.
As soon as I left the doctor’s office, I emailed Dr. Owve Toriz (see previous blog post about My Cancer Diagnosis) to ask his opinion. He called me shortly after getting the email and asked if I would be willing to try an old Russian remedy. He has been to Russia many times and knows this to work for many people. I’m a good guinea pig, so agreed! Anything to avoid tests, surgeries and medications! He also recommended that I eat more on the vegetarian side and be sure to eat as clean a diet as possible. He adjusted some of the supplements I was taking, especially the minerals and asked that I take an Epsom salt bath three times a week to help absorb enough magnesium.
Here is what he told me to do to make the Russian tincture:
Buy 60 walnuts in the shell (regular walnuts, nothing fancy) and a liter of Vodka (again, nothing fancy, just any kind would do, although a Russian Vodka might make it seem more authentic!)
Break open the walnut shells and remove the thin, brittle membrane that runs down the center of the walnut dividing the halves.
Here is what the membranes look like.

Place all of these from the 60 walnut shells into the vodka, put in the refrigerator and let sit for three weeks. I used glass Mason jars. After three weeks, take two teaspoons of the walnut membrane tincture before each meal on an empty stomach, three times per day. Do this for one month, then take two weeks off and get the thyroid tested again. Do one more month of the tincture after the two weeks off.
Note: I needed 60 walnuts for the first month’s worth, and 60 for the next. I made the second batch with enough time to sit in the refrigerator for the full three weeks prior to when I’d take it, so make the second batch while you are taking the first batch.
After about one week of taking this tincture, my heart went back to normal and my energy started returning. My blood test was redone after the first month and came back completely within the normal range! It wasn’t even underactive as before! I think I was about as stunned as anyone! I took the two-week break and then repeated the protocol for one more month. I have continued to feel completely back to normal!
I tried to do some research on this remedy online but couldn’t find much at all. There is one YouTube video done by a man explaining how he had a major thyroid problem and this did the trick for him also, but nothing about why it worked. When I asked Dr. Toriz, his reply was that it had to do with many cofactors and it would regulate both an overactive and underactive thyroid. Well . . . that explains everything!!! It’s times like these, I wish I was more of a scientist so I could understand why cofactors were so important!
I great thing about doing this is that it’s relatively inexpensive and has no side effects – except your family giving you a hard time when you show up for every meal with your little shot of Vodka!!

Hi Karen!
Maria Benzoni Lombardo here! I love the idea of you having a blog and me getting to read it!
I make and use tinctures all the time. This is one I’ve never heard of.
I have 2 questions.
1) can you use regular old walnuts that grow all over western NY?
2) when you talk about “the membrane” that goes down the center, is it the part of the shell that comes down a bit in the center, or is there an actual membrane separating the two halves?
This is the first one if your blog articles I’ve read. I can’t wait to read more!!

Hi Maria! Welcome!! I know you are an expert on tinctures and eating well!! Yay!!
Yes, walnuts grown in NY would be fine. At the time I needed to make it, walnuts weren’t in season and sold at grocery stores so I just ordered some from Amazon.
I’ll put up a picture of what the membranes look like soon. I didn’t have a clue before I started cracking them open and saw just a thin, dark brown, brittle piece that was like a divider of the two halves. It is easily broken if you really smash the shell. Hope this helps until I can get some pics posted!

This is mind-boggling! Two questions: What do you do if you don’t eat 3 meals a day?
After the allotted time, is that it? Done?
Thanks!

It is mind-boggling to me also!! If I hadn’t gone through it myself, I don’t think I’d believe something so simple could do what modern medicine has no cure for!
As for not eating three meals per day, just take it three times per day on an empty stomach, spacing it out like if you were eating breakfast, lunch and dinner.
I asked Dr. Toriz the same question as to whether this is a done deal or not. He hopes so but yearly blood work will show us for sure. Thyroid problems are now known to be an auto immune response so adhering to a good, clean diet, handling stress, etc. will always be important, as you already know!
I feel great; plenty of energy, no weight gain or loss, heart beating normally, so I still “feel” healed! The guy on YouTube says so too! ;).
I’ll definitely keep everyone posted!

I’m so glad you did this piece on the thyroid. I’m sure it will help a lot of people.
I had a needle biopsy done on a nodule last year thankfully it was benign.. I’ve been hoping to find a natural treatment that would help me get back to normal, hopefully this will work for me too.

Hello, Karen. I attended a discussion you had at the home of Trudy S in NY several years ago. I learned so much & I’m grateful for the wisdom I gleaned from you. I have been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s which is an autoimmune issue with the thyroid…and supposidly the #1 underlying cause for thyroid issues. I have only been treated with a bioidentical hormone “Nature Thyroid” (somewhat like Armour) and it helps but not perfectly. I have recently learned that Nature Thyroid is now being produced in China & people are being adversly affected by it. I would like to get off that hormone & treat alternatively, so I am wondering if the walnut membrane & vodka tincture works for low thyroid due Hashimoto’s. Thank yo so much!

Hi Laurie! Good to hear from you! Sorry to hear you are dealing with a thyroid disorder! The only thing I can tell you is what my experience has been and what I have been told regarding the walnut tincture, which is: the tincture will regulate the thyroid, whether it is over active or under active. It will not cause you any harm. You should have your thyroid checked after doing the first month of the tincture (during the two week break before using it for a second full month). You should make your doctor aware that you are trying a tincture and make sure they will order the lab test and adjust your medication, if needed. You might already be aware of this, but avoiding gluten is
pretty important for thyroid health also. Hope this helps! Let me know how you do!

Thank you so much! I just finished cracking all the walnuts & have to wait 3 weeks. I am so excited to see what happens! I appreciate you sharing what you have learned on your journey. What a blessing you are to others. I recently had testing done, so I’ll let you know how it goes after my 1st month.

Question: Do you eat the membrane with the vodka, just drink the vodka or does the membrane dissolve and liquify in the vodka during the 3week period?

Hi Barbara! After the tincture has “cured”, you strain out the membranes and just use the liquid. I actually kept the membranes in the vodka and didn’t strain it at all! I poured out a tablespoon at a time three times a day right off the top and the membranes stay toward the bottom. I maybe was a bit lazy and also figured the longer cure time the better so why not keep it all together??!! Either way will work!
